English is my second language

And I am fine with having an accent. But despite having worked in English for 15 years, I´m still insecure when I write.

When creating content, I fear errors or a too narrow vocabulary. 😱

Until this week.

I started to read “The Copywriter’s handbook” by Robert W. Bly, an author that teaches how to communicate in a professional environment (emails, ads, websites, etc…) in a clear and persuasive way.

He recommends:

✅ To be concise: unnecessary words waste the reader’s time and dilute the message.
✅ To avoid redundancies: be specific and go straight to the point.

For example, use:

✔ GET instead of ❌ OBTAIN
✔ END instead of ❌ TERMINATE
✔ 20 instead of ❌ NUMBER 20
✔ WHETHER instead of ❌ WHETHER OR NOT
✔ A PRINCIPLE instead of ❌ A GENERAL PRINCIPLE
✔ HELPS YOU instead of ❌ CAN HELP YOU
✔ IS instead of ❌ CAN BE CONSIDERED

So, whenever you feel intimidated using a second language, be aware that you don’t need big words. You are probably communicating MUCH better than you think. 😍

Remember that you don’t want to impress people; you are trying to deliver a message. So be confident. Because the way the message is delivered IS an important part of the message!
