The Inner Game

The Inner Game

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNdHA-PLxg0One of my first clients approached me because she wanted a career change. ✨She is a talented professional with great experience, but felt that she needed a self-confidence booster. We started the session and at some point, I just repeated back what she was saying “so it is impossible to find a job“ , and you think ¨I’m not capable¨. She stopped and said “Did I say that?“. “Yes, you said exactly those words”.Before finishing the session I asked her what was her takeaway. She shared how shocked she was with the way she was talking to herself and that she couldn’t believe the things she just said. 😲Historically coaching was used only in sports but in 1973 Timothy Gallwey, one of the parents of coaching, wrote a book called the Inner Game of Tennis, where he explains that a player’s inner game is as important as the external game. The opponent within your own head is much greater than the one on the other side of the net. 😓This concept was translated from sports into business and is one of the pillars of executive coaching today. My client and I were experiencing exactly that within that session.✔ She learned that you have to overcome the obstacles you create yourself and trust your abilities.✔ I learned to be alert because every time a clients asks “Did I say that?”, I know a process of self-awareness has started. Only by looking after your internal dialogue will you be able to stand up to your inner critic.Like any athlete, you have to win something in your mind before you win it in reality. 👊
